Today, the cold was really hard on my knees, so I didn’t walk.

I did, however work out a bit in my living room. It’s tiny, but there’s enough room for me to do a little floor-work. I did a little bit of core work, some crunches, planks and inverted-shrimp-planks. I also did some squats. Not many, (knees) but enough to work up a sweat.

Feeling pretty good. I think I might be fighting off a bit of the cold that's been going around. I was a little headachy through midday.

Sorry for such a short and boring entry, but it was a short and boring kinda day. lol

Tomorrow will be better. I will also have a special video-surprise in the evening.

See you tomorrow!

Day Sixty-Eight

Breakfast: 9am

Mid-Morning: Nothing.

1 Chicken Breast
46oz. Water

Mid-Afternoon: Nothing.

Evening: 8pm

State of Being:
You know…

It’s been exactly three months, as of yesterday, since I started using Visalus. I tried my first shake on October 29, 2012.

It’s only been a little over two months since I started my official 90 Day Challenge on November 24th.

In that first four weeks, I lost thirty-five pounds, and started feeling better.

Then it got rough. I started hitting the rocks or, as I call it… “the wall” for a couple weeks. I was having muscle cramps here and there, I was having little bouts of depression as my insulin levels started fighting back and my blood-sugar was subsequently knocked around. Even considering those things, I was still feeling better than I had since before starting on Vi.

The roughness slowly kind of leveled-off and it got a little easier.

Over the course of the ensuing two months I made a couple of significant changes to my diet, including the cutting-out of soda (diet or otherwise) and salt.

As I sit here now, three months later;
1 - replacing a couple meals with a Vi-Shake and eating protein and veggies for snacks and dinner,
2 - drinking mostly water,
3 - having no pop or added salt on anything,…

...it all honestly feels like it’s just what I do now. It’s just my daily thing. It’s not such an uphill struggle. And I’m still losing weight. Every single day, I feel better than I did the day before.

So, what I’m trying to say is this…

If you’re on the 90 Day Challenge, I can promise you that there will be times when you want to give up.

…Don’t.

See you tomorrow!

Feeling good.

Today was a long day. I got a lot of work done. This afternoon, after my second walk, I came in and worked on some squats and some shrimps. Then I did some core-work with the dumbbells.

Afterward, I went outside and stood with my shirt off and just let the near-freezing rain cool me off. I always used to do that whenever it happened to be raining after a work-out, but I haven't been able to in a long time. I haven't been able to be on my feet for more than like 30 seconds.

Today, standing out there, minute after minute ticked by and I felt this rush of memory from how things used to be. It was really nice.

What was even nicer was going from that to the realization that the best was no longer behind me. All of those fond memories of training, working out, etc. are just the beginning. I have lots more training to explore in my life and contrary to what it has seemed like for the last several years,... I am, in fact going to be able to do it.

I have been filled with a feeling of gratitude all day.

I have a really cool idea for a video that I’m going to be filming Friday morning, if all goes according to plan. Here’s hoping.

Actually, to be more accurate; I was recently presented with an interesting problem and I've come up with a really cool solution. It has also occurred to me that filming the application of that solution, would likely be lots of fun. lol

Make sure you check back in at the end of the week to check that out!

See you tomorrow!

Slept a lot today.

Feel really good, but I was asleep for most of the day. Long day yesterday and the day before. Today’s little weather warm-up helped alleviate some of the throbbing in my knee. That was nice.

Only got one walk in, today, though.

Working on organizing some stuff with the people who are doing the Challenge with me. This will likely be easier once the weather gets better. Nobody (other than me) likely wants to go hang out in the park in this kind of weather, for example. But, an afternoon bowling or something might be good. I’d also like to do group weigh-ins, but that’s tricky considering we’re all at different points in our Challenges.

Hmmm…

Going to have to noodle it for a while.

See you tomorrow!

Man, these freezing temperatures the last few days have had my knee throbbing like hell. Because of that, I’ve been needing to use my cane, yesterday and today, which is a bummer, but I’m sure it’ll get better soon.

In spite of that, I walked yesterday and today, if for no reason other than the fact that I don't like being bullied by you-know-who. So, when I feel it breathing down my neck, I like to pull the occasional Crazy-Ivan just to mess with it.

Otherwise I feel great!

Energy’s up. Mood’s up.

Got to hang out with friends tonight. It was a pretty good day!

Wow, the weather hit today, and I felt it before I even got out of bed.

My joints were aching so bad, I could tell it was snowing outside without even opening my eyes. The roads here have been bad all day and I’ve been creaking, cracking and throbbing right along with it. I didn’t walk today, partially because of the aches and pains and mostly because our parking lot and sidewalk outside are very slick. If I fall, it’s like falling two or three stories to a normal person, so I thought I’d play it safe today.

Got a lot done today. Very tired now, so I’m going to turn in.

Felt a little run down today. I’m certain that it’s from having missed so many meals yesterday. It was a low, easily surmounted version of the Wall. We’ll call it a speed-bump.

Got to meet Scott & Sarah’s niece Lauren today, who was very cool. We got together with her for dinner at Panera Bread this evening. She’s going to be helping me out with some web-page design, as I know next to nothing about that, and she’s an expert. lol

I’ve been looking for a way to get both of my blogs (my story-blog and my daily-report) and all my videos and everything together on one web page, to cut down on FB posts and whatnot, so that was the topic of discussion.

Going into Panera Bread provided a good test of my resolve. I don’t want to avoid places and situations where there will be food that I can’t have. I’m close enough to a shut-in due to my car situation already. Lol But, once I walked past the giant display case we’ll just call “Baker’s Heaven” which is the first thing you see when you walk in the door, and sat down at a table, I was ok. It helped that my salad was loaded with protein and delicious!

To be honest, it wasn’t even the greatest test I’ve faced yet. Not even close.

I made it through Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas without cheating. Believe me, after that Panera Bread was a light obstacle, at best.

Oh, and a couple weeks ago, I was gaming with some friends on a Saturday night and they ordered pizza, wings, some kind of fried potato product and had a huge box of Dunkin Donuts on the table. Again,… after running the Holiday food-gauntlet without falling off the wagon,… it’s going to take more than some fried-dough and Italian-pies to trip me up.

I am feeling some salt-withdrawal, though. I’ve been noticing my teeth grinding and I get this tight, restless feeling in my jaw-muscles… like I need to be chewing something. It’s either withdrawal or I’m turning into a dog, one of the two.

I’m coping.

Getting some people together for a Challenge Party tomorrow, if you’re interested in checking it out, seeing if the Challenge might be for you, get in touch with me.

See you tomorrow!

Two-thirds of the way there!

Yeah… I know… I was horribly off-track today.

I didn’t have breakfast.

I didn’t have a mid-morning snack.

I had tea for “lunch.”

I had a nutra-cookie for my mid-afternoon snack, which is only half a full meal, according to Visalus guidelines.

But, I had an awesome dinner. <:)

It was a very busy day from the moment I opened my eyes, this morning. I honestly just didn’t think to eat before I left the house with Scott, this afternoon. (btw, my cousin Scott is in town this week. We’re working together.)

I started feeling weak and had some cramps in the late-afternoon evening, which serves me right, I guess. lol

I wanted to talk a bit today about goals.

I believe in setting goals in threes. There should be a short-term goal, an intermediate-term goal and a long-term goal. The 90 Day Challenge fits this mentality perfectly. It’s basically three months. So,… a Thirty-Day Goal, a Sixty-Day Goal and a Ninety-Day Goal.

Aside from this I have only two rules about goal-setting, but they are rock solid to me.

Rule 1: You must have a deadline.

Each of your three goal-levels must have a definite deadline. Without a deadline, you have not set a goal. All you’ve done is made a wish.

Without the mechanism that a deadline creates, you end up walking around in circles, never really sure of where to go. Faced with a ticking clock the mind is capable of much more. Given the pressure of a deadline, the mind will not waste time on ideas and strategies that it subconsciously knows to be unlikely to bear fruit. It will filter out the wheat from the chaff and give you definite leanings toward one idea or another. Instinct is a remarkable and vastly undervalued capacity, in my opinion.

You might be wrong. You might fail. But, I think that it is much easier to adapt on the fly when you are decisive, committed, and most importantly in motion than when you are faltering, wishy-washy and inert. Decisiveness requires that we become discerning as to how much of our time we spend,… and on what.

February 21st (Day 90) is coming. It is relentlessly marching toward me. It doesn’t stop to take a break, or slow down and rest, just because I do. Therefore, I must spend the limited supply of time and energy that I have available to me, on those things that instinct tells me are most likely to bring success.

Rule 2: Set a goal SO BIG that you can't achieve it until you grow into the person who can.

If you're trying to change, your goals should be in service of that change. They should be impossible for the person you are now. They should be possible only for the person you WILL be.

All that having been said, I have set two separate goal-tracks for myself. I call these my “Weight Track” and my “Fitness Track.”

My Weight Track is as follows…
Short-Term: Lose 100 pounds by February 22nd, 2013
Intermediate-Term: Lose 300 pounds by January 1st, 2014
Long-Term: Reach my Ideal Weight (lose 400-420 pounds) by June 1st, 2014

My Fitness Track is…
Short-Term: Regain the ability to stand and walk indefinitely, without having to sit down to catch my breath every two minutes… by June 1st, 2013
Long-Term: Compete in the Tough Mudder in Summer of 2014

Now, until recently my fitness track had been missing an Intermediate goal. But, now I have one. I set it just a few days ago. It is to begin studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by September of this year.

To recap from previous posts, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was a style that I’d always considered to be out-of-reach for me. It's a ground-fighting oriented system, (one of the few, in a world dominated by more pugilistic styles) and due to my physical-build, I had long ago assumed that I’d never be able to do that stuff. All of my training in that arena has been to escape from the ground, not to actually stay down there and fight. By and large, I’ve been trained to view ground-fighting the way a cat views water; uncomfortable and to be avoided at all costs. lol

Until I found the Challenge, I'd learned to just accept that I'd never be able to do this.

Much like with the Tough Mudder-goal, and even with my short-term goal of regaining my capacity for indefinite walking, this goal is something that is physically impossible for me right now. Something that I literally CANNOT do until I’ve significantly changed my physical circumstances.

…which makes it a perfect goal.

Feeling good today.

I was up way too late last night. But, I got some good restful sleep.

I wanted to mention that specifically. It’s one of the positive changes I’ve noticed over the last few weeks. I’m sleeping better.

True, I had a sleepless night a few days ago. But, I think I was hitting the wall. By and large, I’ve been sleeping for a nice six-hour stretch at a time, without waking up every couple hours. And when I wake up, I feel great! That wasn’t always the case. I used to wake up and feel terrible, like all I wanted to do was go back to sleep. Now, I wake up and it feels like the world is smiling at me. Like it was just waiting for me to open my eyes so that it could greet me.

I went back out to East Coast Martial Arts today, with my good friend Matt Murphy. He’s a professional photographer and all-around film-guy. So, prepare yourself for a massive (albeit very brief) upswing in the quality of my YouTube offerings, that will quickly devolve right back down to its usual standard. lol

Got some really good tips and advice from Chad and Pete about what kinds of things I should be working on, in the short term to prepare myself to join the class in the fall. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is completely new to me, and like I said, it’s a system that I had long ago written off as simply out of my reach, due to my build. I’m going to be working on changing that.

That footage is coming soon. Matt’s going to be editing it together and getting it to me and I’ll post it asap. :)

See you tomorrow!

Even after yesterday’s little project, I wasn’t sore. I mean, my knees and back were stiff and sore, but no more than they always are. I didn’t have any muscle soreness.

At gaming, I was able to get up and down the stairs at Jerry & Natasha’s place without my cane and at a speed comparable to that of a normal person. lol

Sorry, this is going up so late. I got slammed with stuff to do this afternoon and I lost track of time.

State of Being:
So, yeah… I walked today, even though I’d planned on giving it a rest for the remainder of the week. When I woke up this morning, my back wasn’t feeling so bad, so I went ahead and did a lap after breakfast. Then, this evening, in fact just a few minutes ago, I did another one.

I’m to the point where I’m not really leaning on the cane very much for most of the trip. By the time I’m about two-thirds of the way back to the apartment though, I usually have to start leaning on it a bit. By the time I'm actually back in the apartment, I'm huffing, puffing and full-on limping on the cane again.

From watching my Taking Out the Trash videos, you may not have realized that I walk with a cane, since, during those trips, I’ve got the cart to lean on, if I need to. And also since I've declared a goal to compete in next year's Tough Mudder, and no sane person who needs a cane to get around would ever commit to such a thing. ;)

So, now… after taking two walks I hadn’t planned on taking… I’m feeling mostly ok. Back’s sore, but what else is new? I wish it would learn a different tune, truthfully. :)

Got out to East Coast Martial Arts last night, talked with my friend Chad a bit as well as one of their MMA-Fit coaches named Mandy about steps I might take over the next several months to get conditioned for joining the club.

I got video, but truthfully… I want to get a bit more before I put the final cut together for you guys. I’ll be heading back out there on Sunday. Sunday night, I’ll post everything. I promise. :)

I want to thank everybody who’s been talking with me on Facebook and via email. You guys have been keeping my spirits up more than you know! You know who you are. Thank you.

I’m debating a video surprise for tomorrow. It will take some courage, but I think I’m up for it.

Didn’t walk today. Back was throbbing a little too much. I wanted to give it more of a chance to rest. In fact, I think I’m going to be taking a break from walking for the remainder of the week and see if I can’t get ahead of this muscle-pull or strain or whatever it is.

I accept that my back is going to hurt until my gut has gone from “gigantic” down to merely “huge,” but what I’ve been feeling from it lately is a little more than its typical soreness.

I am going to exercise, but I’m thinking I’ll do something chair-bound and aerobic.

Feeling pretty good today!

I only did one walk, due to excessive knee pain, but otherwise I’m doing very well.

I’ve been thinking a lot today about the specific features and tenets of my diet. Now that I’ve crossed that line into the second-half of my 90 days, I’m looking at ways that I can apply what the first half taught me toward the task of fine-tuning what I’m doing.

I’ve got some definite ideas on this, but I haven’t really hammered everything out yet. I will have that done by week’s end and will probably cover everything in a video.

Heading out to Team East Coast Martial Arts tomorrow evening. A friend of mine teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu there. That’s a style I’ve been wanting to get into for a long time, but was never really able to in the past. Even when I was still capable of training, systems that are primarily oriented on ground-fighting tend not to mesh well with the possession of a gigantic gut. Based on my physicality, ever since adolescence, I'd resigned myself to the idea that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was something that was simply forbidden to me. Out of my reach. However, now that I know that there is, in fact light at the end of the tunnel and that I can actually get rid of my gut, (Thanks, Visalus!) I am very excited that this art is something that I will be able to finally delve into after all!

If you haven't picked up on it from previous posts, I don't believe in vague, nebulous goals. Those kind of goals tend to have finish-lines situated somewhere between Shangri-La and Oz. You never seem to actually reach them. I believe in setting goals with real, concrete time-frames.

In my view, "Some day," "Eventually," and "Soon," are every bit as real as the Easter Bunny.

So, I’m going to be paying special attention to the first part of the class, which in most martial arts training is when the conditioning exercises are done. Each exercise that I see during that segment will inform my exercise and fitness goals over the next several months. The goal will be to simply become capable of performing the exercises. From there I will set goals by number of repetitions. When I can do a hundred of each exercise, split-up into sets of no less than 25 each, I will join the class.

I will join the class by September of this year.

“The bigger the challenge, the greater the reward.”
-Blake Mallen
