Mid-Morning:Nothing.

Lunch: 11am
1 Banana Visalus Shake

Mid-Afternoon: Nothing.

Evening: 9pm
1 Lg. Caesar Salad
46oz. Iced-Tea (Unsweetened)

State of Being:

So,… today was interesting.

It was my grocery-shopping day and my Mom offered to come and help me, since I was going to the local Save-A-Lot to try and save some $$$, and Save-A-Lot doesn’t have motorized riding-carts, (at least the one in Kent doesn’t.)

This was an amazingly selfless act, considering that Mom has Multiple Sclerosis and is also currently nursing some kind of nerve injury which has severely hampered her left arm. We brought Mason with us, as he was staying with Mom yesterday and today.

I Love you to death, Mom and I still feel like crap about needing the help. Thank you.

Anyway, it’s been a weird week, leading up to today. My portion sizes in meals have been very small this week as I was running out of food. Even my Visalus Shakes, I’ve been mixing with water rather than milk, for about the last week-and-a-half. I finally ran-out completely, as in *nothing-in-the-fridge-nor-any-of-the-cupboards* OUT of food, on Wednesday. Compound this with the fact that I just COULD-NOT-SLEEP last night and you have a recipe for the disaster that I’m leading up to with the following tale of harrowing adventure...

Yesterday, I was at Mom’s helping to look after Mason while she kept an appointment, and she fed me (slow-cooked chicken straight from Heaven.) But, it apparently wasn’t enough to prevent what happened to me this morning.

About halfway over to Mom’s house, to pick her and Mason up, I started having horrible cramps… and I mean, EVERYWHERE. Every time I moved, breathed, coughed, anything, at least three different places just seized up and pinched. So, I had to grab something to eat on the road and I swung through a McDonald’s and got the little breakfast that you see listed above in the food-log. And yes,… I did eat the bagel. I didn’t take it off and only eat the meat, eggs and cheese. And yes,… I had orange juice… good ole’ super-high glycemic-index, insulin-triggering orange juice. I also slugged down about 90oz of water. It wasn’t dietary weakness that put the bagel and the juice in my stomach, though. I was legitimately doing everything I could to stop the cramping. So,… yeah… sugar, starch, more sugar, Vitamin C, water, water, water… etc.

As I sat in the McD’s parking lot trying to eat my breakfast, the cramps moved into my chest,… which of course, triggered a panic-attack. Now, I haven’t actually *had* a panic attack in a long while. My medicine keeps it pretty well controlled. But, the origin of my panic-disorder occurred in a time when two different doctors were telling me, several years ago, that I was going to die soon, because my heart couldn’t take the strain brought on by my obesity and my insulin levels. They were literally berating me with it. One of them even tried to scare me into signing up for bariatric surgery (for which she would receive a substantial kick-back, I’m sure) by telling me that she thought I might die in the next few days.

Here’s the story on that; When someone is first diagnosed with panic-disorder, it is usually only after they’ve been to the ER about a dozen times *thinking* they were having a heart attack, as the symptoms are remarkably similar, and, for whatever reason, most non-psych doctors apparently don't think to mention, (even after your several EKGs come-up whistle-clean) that you might be having panic attacks. So, on approximately, my fifth or sixth trip to the ER, and about my tenth completely clean EKG, I was following up with my doctor and she looked at the EKG results and said she was sending me back to the ER to be watched overnight as she was worried that I might not make it another 24 hours. So, my then-fiance Amy and I drove back out to the ER, with tears in her eyes, less than a month away from our wedding, discussing what I wanted done with my remains, in the *very likely* event that we were heading into my last night on Earth.

(as an aside: The ER doctor on call happened to be the same one who’d seen me before and after two more EKGs, he came to speak to me and I explained to him what my doctor had said and why she’d sent me back out there, and he literally rolled his eyes and said, ‘Ok, let’s settle this, once and for all,” and ordered up a full stress-test for my heart, which I had done in the next few weeks by a Cardiovascular specialist. A story in itself that I won’t go into now. The stress-test gave me a “Heart-is-Healthy-As-A-Horse” bill of health, and I stopped going to my regular doctor, and to this day I still refuse to pay my outstanding balance with her practice. I swear on my life that I will die in prison before I give her one more penny.

Moving on…)

In spite of the protein, the carbs and all the water, the cramping really didn’t stop until after we’d gotten back to my apartment with the groceries and I had a couple bananas, then after I’d dropped Mom and Mason off back at Mom’s place, I came home and slept for several hours. Now,… I’m still getting little cramps here and there, but it’s definitely lessened.

The sailing is anything but smooth on this journey, but you know what they say…

Challenge Four: Day Fifty-Seven

Breakfast: 9am
1 Peanut Butter Cup Visalus Shake

Mid-Morning: Nothing.

Lunch: 2pm
3 Tbsp. Peanut Butter
32oz. V8 (Low Sodium, Spicy Hot)
46oz. Water

Mid-Afternoon:4pm
1 Sweet Cream Visalus Shake

Evening: 8pm
1 Chicken Breast (w/Black Pepper & Tabasco Sauce)
2 Cups of Steamed Broccoli
46oz. Water

State of Being:

Excellent day today, with some excellent news!

Ever since I was about 19-20, I haven’t been able to do much, in the way of abdominal exercises, like crunches, sit-ups, etc. The largest fatty-deposit on my entire frame is easily my gut. Whenever I have tried to do those kind of exercises for the last couple decades, I get horrible, agonizing cramps in my abdominal muscle-wall as quickly as the third or fourth repetition. It’s just one of the little unpleasantnesses of being so severely obese. Even though I remained athletically active throughout my twenties and early-thirties (I only had to finally stop training altogether about two-and-a-half years ago,) my abs went soft and fragile a long, long time before that.

It’s something that I’ve been working on by gradually doing more and more on each week's “Abs-Day,” ever since I started the Challenge.

Well, today… I decided to push it.

Currently, in my regular abdominal workout routine, I am up to 45 Crunches. That’s 3 sets of 15 repetitions.

Today, however…. I did FIVE sets.

Yep. SEVENTY-FIVE crunches, with no cramping, no soreness. I immediately got up and took one of my walking-laps afterward, and I wasn’t winded and I had no pain.

Now, I know a lot of people on the Challenge. You guys are all awesome, and I Love you,... don’t get me wrong. But, many of you spry, strapping fitness-model-looking Challengers, who have been on the Challenge longer than I, and/or started-off with a lot less weight-to-lose, may not realize what a big thing this is for a man of my size.

So, take a break for a minute from your hundreds-of-squats, or your 5K Marathons, tell the photographer shooting your “Beach” -set to go get some coffee or something, and allow me to illuminate… ;)

First, read over this short list.

1. 15 Crunches

2. 15 Crunches

3. 15 Crunches

4. 15 Crunches

5. 15 Crunches

6. Getting up off the floor from a completely prone position.

7. Walking around for a couple minutes, as I texted and voxed friends and family about my accomplishment.

8. Walking out to my building’s dumpster.

9. Walking back from my building’s dumpster.

I can tell you, with absolutely NO exaggeration, that one year ago, HALF of any ONE of the items on that list, would have had me huffing and puffing, on the verge of passing out, taking my pulse every few minutes to make sure it hadn’t gone irregular and hoping for the best. Here's proof.

Just as an aside here, this is precisely the OPPOSITE of what three different doctors (including a weight-loss specialist and an endocrinologist) claimed was in store for me over this past year.

Thank you, Visalus!

Challenger Profile: Melissa Rainey Frodahl

Christopher: “Tell us a bit about yourself. Who is Melissa?”

Melissa: "I am a stay at home mom of 2 little boys. I keep very busy, as every mom does. My husband, Erik, and I met in 2005 at a Christian bible camp in Maine. And we have now been together for 8 happy years. I love the outdoors and spending time with my horse, Hickory.”

Christopher: “On your Facebook Profile, you’ve mentioned that you’ve suffered with a lot of health problems. What were your symptoms?”

Melissa: "First, I would like to back up to my earlier years. As a child, and right up through high school, I kept very active with sports. I did basketball, and cross country. But I mainly focused on Martial Arts which I enjoyed very much. With a lot of hard work and determination, I ranked top in my class and was in the best physical shape of my life.

Skip ahead to 2005 where I met my husband, Erik. We fell in love, and then a few years later I gave birth to our first son. While I was pregnant I gained a healthy baby weight. But I quickly and happily lost it all. When I gave birth to my second son I, again, lost all my baby weight but then still dropped down even 20 pounds lower. This is when all my health problems began to surface.

I began getting sick after eating EVERY single meal. This resulted in me eating little to nothing every day. Sometimes I would have just a bowl of cereal in the morning and an even smaller meal for supper. And of course, when I didn’t eat… I lost weight and couldn’t gain it back. Meanwhile, I began to develop severe digestive problems that made every day a struggle.

Extremely bad ‘brain fog’ was another symptom that became very disabling. It made even the simplest tasks of everyday life seem impossible to accomplish. My husband had to repeat something at least 5 times before I could grasp and retain it. I got so frustrated with myself, that it became overwhelming. It was an absolutely horrible feeling.”

Christopher: “What did the doctors tell you?”

Melissa: "My chiropractor thought that my health problems were related to having my gallbladder removed, which would cause my liver to work extra hard. He told me that I would probably have to be on a special vitamin supplement for the rest of my life, to help my liver function properly. Others suggested that I might have a food allergy of some kind, and tried putting me on a clear liquid diet for 3 days. Once the 3 days were over, I was told to slowly start adding foods to my diet. If I reacted badly to a particular food, then it was probably the culprit. But I wasn’t even able to get through half a day on this diet, before getting sick on a bowl of jello. The doctor was puzzled after that, and scheduled an Upper GI test at the local hospital. I passed the test with no abnormal problems. I was never able to get a clear diagnosis after that."

Christopher: “How did you find out about the Body by Vi 90-Day Challenge?”

Melissa: “An old friend of the family came to visit us on a family trip to Maine. While catching up on life, we came to learn that her husband had recently lost 80 pounds in 90 days! My husband was interested in losing a few pounds himself, and joined the challenge shortly after."

Christopher: “When did you get started on the Challenge?”

Melissa: “Once I learned that the 90-Day Challenge was not just for weight loss, but for whole body wellness, I quickly got on board with my husband. I started my own challenge on September 28th, 2013 and it has completely changed my life!”

Christopher: “What's your goal?”

Melissa: “My initial goal was to just feel healthy and normal. That goal has already become a reality in my life. Now I have a new goal. I am determined to get back into even better physical shape then I was in high school! I am looking to gain 10 pounds of muscle before my 90 days are over.”

Christopher: “What’s been your greatest obstacle in making these changes?”

Melissa: “At first, the money aspect was an obstacle. I didn’t think that we could afford to buy the products. But I knew that I had to do something to better my health. I had heard many success stories of people who had joined the challenge, but was skeptical at first. But since I was desperate, and had nothing else that had worked for me, I took one last chance on a product (Visalus) that showed good potential. Now, I can happily say that I am another success story! My life will never be the same."

Christopher: “How have things changed for you since taking on the Challenge?”

Melissa: “As of today, I am on day 30 of the challenge, and I am leaps and bounds beyond were I thought I would be! I had no idea that this challenge would change my whole life! I can now eat my meals without getting sick, and feel absolutely amazing! I no longer have ‘brain fog’ and can operate with a clear head, and enjoy life! I thank God that those days are behind me! Another extra benefit has been an acne free face! I have always had bad acne. But after 2 weeks on the challenge, my husband says “your face has never been this clear in 7 years of marriage”! I have only missed one day of the challenge, which resulted in an immediate breakout. But when I started back up the very next day…my acne started to disappear again. Absolutely amazing!

I want everyone to know, that they could be the next success story! My dream was to just feel healthy and normal. That dream has become a reality in my life. It CAN be done! Whether you need to lose a few pounds, gain some muscle or just BE healthy….you can do it! If you are struggling with health issues, I urge you to take the steps to a better you!

There is HOPE. You just have to reach out and take it!”

Lunch: 5pm
1 Orange-Everyday-Defense Visalus Shake

Mid-Afternoon: 8pm
46oz. Water

Evening: 10pm
1 Chicken Breast (slow-cooked w/Red-Onion, Garlic & BBQ Sauce)
2 Cups of Steamed Broccoli
46oz. Water

State of Being:

Feeling a lot better today.

Yesterday was,… I can’t even describe it. It was bad.

It happens sometimes. I get these little bouts of depression. It’s the kind of thing that happened a lot more when I was first getting started. In fact, it kept up in its frequency pretty much through the first six months.

It has to do with hormones triggered by insulin, etc. I’ve talked about it at length before, I won’t bore you, rehashing it now.

I can say though, that it’s rarity nowadays is encouraging. It means I’m making definite headway against this adversary of mine.

It also makes the incidents, when they do happen, that much more impacting… that much more affecting. But, hey… I’ll take it if it means I’m getting closer to victory.

You can’t sail across the ocean without getting soaked and tossed around by the occasional storm.

Today has been a very good day. So, yesterday can get bent. :)

Challenge Four: Day Fifty-Three

Breakfast: 9am
1 Peanut Butter Cup Visalus Shake
46oz. Water

Mid-Morning: Nothing.

Lunch: 2pm
1 Peanut Butter Cup Visalus Shake

Mid-Afternoon: 5pm
46oz. Water

Evening: 9pm
1 Chicken Breast (slow-cooked w/Red-Onions, Garlic & BBQ Sauce)
16oz. V8 (Low Sodium, Spicy Hot)
46oz. Water

State of Being:

Tired.

I’ve been confronting a lot of my past, lately… my emotional baggage. As much as I would like to believe that I’m free of it, I’m really not, and I don’t think that I ever will be. Is that right? Is that ok? I don’t know. I think it’s just the way certain things in life are.

Wounds heal, scars don’t.

I truly believe that, on an emotional level, vis-a-vis relationships with people, I’m fundamentally broken. Literally everyone I’ve ever been intimate with has abused me, both severely and repeatedly. Still, to this day, I watch the social interactions of “normal” people, and it’s a complete mystery. I don’t understand all of the subtext and subtlety present in everyday conversation,… things that are so obvious to everyone else. Following a conversation, I won’t figure out even half of what someone was ostensibly *really* talking about, until days later, in retrospect, if ever.

It’s so tiring.

I’m trying very hard to move forward and to not dwell on how long it takes to change. But, real change… does take time. Lots of it.

It troubles me so much, sometimes the way the past can just jump up and slam into my chest, right as I’m starting to think that I’m doing better and finally getting clear of it. It’s the most discouraging thing that consistently happens in my life. It’s like getting a flat-tire, every time you leave the house.

I don’t have a ray of sunshine to end on, today. It’s been a rough one and I guess I’m just kind of stewing.

I’m still moving. I’m still making progress. But, I don’t get to go to bed feeling great every single night. Some nights are like this one.

But, would it really be worth doing, otherwise?

I tell myself,… Look, if you’re thinking you’re not going to have days like these, then… what? Did you just not really believe how deep this hole was? How worthy a battle it was to undertake?

To win at all, is victory. If every day was a blazing triumph,… it wouldn’t be such a worthwhile endeavor.

But, I still don’t understand why my life thus far has been the way it’s been. I hope that one day, I will.

See you tomorrow.

I feel SO lazy today!

This is the least I’ve gotten accomplished on any day in the last six months. I hung around the apartment, did my dishes, played with Olivia, crushed a bunch of inept punks who never should have stepped onto the battlefield with me in the first place on League of Legends, played with Olivia some more, read some Jim Butcher, took a nap, punished unskilled play with a sound thrashing on Call of Duty: Black Ops and played with Olivia again.

Seriously, typing this update has been the closest I’ve come to “work” since yesterday. (I don’t consider doing my dishes to be “work” since I get so much thinking and planning done while I’m at the sink.)

I *should* have packed up my laundry into the car and gotten it washed today, but I didn’t. Deal with that.

Challenge Four: Day Forty-Four

Breakfast: Nothing.

Mid-Morning: Nothing.

Lunch: Nothing.

Mid-Afternoon: Nothing.

Evening: Nothing.

State of Being:

Yes, today was my fasting-day for the week. Feeling pretty good.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to have to stop the 30-Day Leg-Blitz, for now. Even having stepped down the intensity, as I did for this try, it’s still too much.

To clarify, it’s not muscle pain that has me concerned. My leg and low-back muscles are sore, but it’s the constant pain in my knees that gives me pause. It’s gotten so bad that my last round of squats, I think I was lowering myself less than an inch on each repetition. The pain in my knees was just unbearable.

I think, at this point, I’m still too heavy, just like before in Challenge Two when the goal was full upright mobility, it seems that really having a dedicated squat-challenge is a bit out of reach for the time being. My schedule was three-days-on, one-day-off and that clearly has not been sufficient time to allow my knees to recover fully. So, I’m still going to squat as part of my regular exercise, y’know… on leg days, and of course I’m still going to get my daily walking-laps in. But, as far as the leg-blitz is concerned, I'm going to take discretion as the better part of valor here and be done with it, ...for now.

I will attempt it again once I’m in the low 400s (430 or lower) weight-wise. Once I’m within striking distance of the 300s, I’ll feel a lot more confident about taking it on. That may even be light-enough to consider getting my knees worked on. For the time being, getting my menisci (the shock-absorptive cartilage-cushions in the center of the knee joints,) refilled with artificial cartilage would be futile, as my weight would simply crush them flat again within a matter of months, if not weeks.

Speaking of work-outs, yesterday was an Arms-Day for my resistance training and I decided to up the weight I used for each exercise by five pounds. This meant my side lateral raises (shoulders) went from twenty to twenty-five pounds (each arm), my overhead triceps extensions went from twenty to twenty-five pounds (again, each arm), my curls went from fifteen to twenty, and my wrist-curls went from ten to fifteen. Each exercise is usually three sets of fifteen repetitions. Considering the weight-bump, I decided to cut each set’s rep-count down to ten.

For the rest of the day, my arms were very sore! lol In particular, my shoulders and triceps felt like heavy stones. Even today, something as simple as the motion of bringing my 46oz water-bottle from my desktop to my lips causes my arm to pinch and throb in certain places. It’s not bad, but still noticeable.

I had my evening shake about fifteen minutes after I’d cooled down from lifting, so I know the recovery had a lot of help through the night.

See you tomorrow!

Challenge Four: Day Thirty-Eight

Breakfast: Nothing.

Mid-Morning: Nothing.

Lunch: Nothing.

Mid-Afternoon: Nothing.

Evening: Nothing.

State of Being:
Fasted today.

I think I’m going to get into the habit of doing this one day per week. I’ll probably randomize which day of the week it is. If it happens on Saturday one week, I won’t do it Sunday, etc. Don’t want to double-up.

I always feel really good afterward. I think it helps me to kind of reset. Cleanse, etc.

See you tomorrow!
